Siddharth Roy Kapur and Vidya Balan

Siddharth Roy Kapur is known for his suave and sophisticated ways. One of his close friends revealed that before he fell for our desi Vidya Balan, Sid preferred all things western. The friend says he was not high on those mangalsutra-wearing, maang mein sindoor girls. Apparently, he's too much in love with Vidya, so anything she wears is good for him. But personally he likes her in western attire. Or even better, if she is wearing her desi sari with a contemporary slant like she was at the Bombay Times party, where she looked very attractive.

Image by Mark Seliger, courtesy: Time.com Actor Aamir Khan has made Time magazine's list of 100 Most Influential People of 2013. Aamir, who created an international presence with his 2012 TV series Satyamev Jayate, is named as a "pioneer" on the list. Satyamev Jayate examined social and economic issues like female foeticide and medical malpractices and had wide-ranging impact across the country, including promises from state governments to set up fast track courts and Aamir being invited to be part of discussion on medical FDI by a Parliamentary committee.

Composer A R Rahman writes on Time.com : He uses his gifts as a charmer to give his audience the most bitter medicine. Hypnotized, we take it without complaint. That's Aamir's magic at work. Satyamev Jayate was not intended to provide solutions but to ask hard questions, the kind society is often reluctant to address. By showing the courage to ask those questions, Aamir has started a movement that will help change the world in which Indians live. Jai ho!

Aamir also features on one of the seven special edition covers of the 2013 Time 100 issue.

Aamir, described by Time as a film star and activist, is not the only Indian on the list. Also named as a "pioneer," is lawyer Vrinda Grover, one of the leading voices calling for change and justice after the fatal gang-rape of a medical student on board a Delhi bus.

The Time 100 list also includes "leaders" Barack Obama and Pope Francis, "pioneer" Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, "titans" Jay-Z and Sheryl Sandberg, "icons" Malala Yousafzai, Aung San Suu Kyi, Michelle Obama, Daniel Day-Lewis, Justin Timberlake and Kate Middleton, and "artists" Jennifer Lawrence and Steven Spielberg.

Sachin Tendulkar says not bothered by retirement opinion of others

Sachin Tendulkar says not bothered by retirement opinion of others

On the question of the likes of former captains Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman giving opinions about him, though not necessarily negative, Tendulkar asked, "You think they were talking wrong things about me?" Some of Tendulkar's counter questions to queries prevented the scribes from asking follow-up questions.

New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar may not be in the best of form of late but the senior Indian batman on Thursday said that he was not bothered by the opinion of others about his retirement and that he would just stick to his job.

"Lots of people have been talking about this question (of retirement). If I remember correctly, this question began in 2005 and it has been continuing since then. But my answer has been I will stick to my job and you stick to your job," he said at the sidelines of a promotional event.

"It does not affect me," Tendulkar said when asked whether the constant talk of when he would retire had irritated him or affected his performance.

Tendulkar talked about how media speculated on his 100th international century after he scored his 99th ton during the 2011 World Cup.

"It was the media doing all the build-up. I scored my 99th international hundred during the World Cup. You (media) kept quiet during the World Cup, not discussing about my 100th ton as there were the other more important matter of India winning the tournament. After the World Cup there was again this focus on my 100th international ton," he said.

Some of Tendulkar's counter questions to queries prevented the scribes from asking follow-up questions.

Asked if he read newspapers often, Tendulkar shot back, "Main newspaper parte rahunga to kaun khelega (If I keep on reading newspaper then who will play)."

On the question of the likes of former captains Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman giving opinions about him, though not necessarily negative, Tendulkar asked, "You think they were talking wrong things about me?"

On a serious note, Tendulkar said that he was not bothered by the opinion of the others.

"People are free to give their opinions. Lots of people are giving opinions about me. Some have played the game and they were giving opinions. Some have not played the game and they are also giving opinions. But I don't worry about opinions," he said.

"It's a package deal. You won't score a hundred everytime you go out to bat. And like that you won't get positive comments all the time. So I can't control on what others say. What I can do is to just focus on the things I can handle, that is to play to the best of my ability," he added.

Tendulkar said his family does not discuss cricket and so the game was not at the centre of things in his household.

"We don't discuss cricket in our family. Our family discuss other issues of the day but not cricket. When I want to discuss cricket, I do it with my brother," said Tendulkar who is now a Rajya Sabha member.

Tendulkar has now become one of the most followed celebrities in the social media space with 3.2 million people following his Twitter handle and he said was happy that he was able to raise money for charity through this platform.

"Actually, I started this twitter handle after my friends told me that there were many fake accounts in my name telling things which I have not said and done. To stop all those things I started my twitter account.

"But, the platform of social media served a very good purpose. Through that I was able to raise money for young cancer patients. Lots of people donated money for these children after reading my appeal on my twitter account. I thanked all those who have made the donations," he said.

Talking about the fast-paced dissemination of information through digital medium, Tendulkar said that these initiatives should start from the schools if the country wants the actual benefits.

"It's amazing the flow of information is so fast-paced now. So, this kind of digital information with updates of news every 6-7 hours is incredible. It's good for people like us who are always on the move, to get fresh and updated news very fast.

"But I feel this digital initiatives should start from the schools so that the children can start learning from a very young age and get hold of the opportunities that are available now."

Supreme Court gives time to Sanjay Dutt to surrender

Supreme Court gives time to Sanjay Dutt to surrender

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted four more weeks to Sanjay Dutt to surrender in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

Sanjay Dutt had sought a six-month extension of the April 18 surrender deadline to allow him to complete shooting of seven films worth Rs 278 crore.

Rejecting Sanjay Dutt's plea, the apex court said he has to surrender after four weeks and undergo his remaining jail term.

The court said that the actor will not be entitled to any further extension of time hereafter.

The CBI opposed the extension of time but was silenced by the court which asked, why didn't the agency file an appeal against Dutt's acquittal from TADA charges by the trial court?

In its order on March 21, the apex court had upheld Dutt's conviction under the Arms Act for possessing illegal arms.

However, it had reduced his sentence from six to five years.

Sanjay Dutt has completed one-and-half years in jail and has to serve the remainder three-and-half years of his sentence.

The makers of the Mary Kom biopic are going to great lengths to make their film as authentic as possible, sources say.

Priyanka Chopra, who plays the boxing champion in the Omung Kumar-directed movie, is believed to have already started fitness training.

The producers are keen on roping in either a professional boxing coach or one who has worked with the best films in the genre (like Rocky and Million Dollar Baby). They are even considering working with someone who has trained national boxing champions.

Meanwhile, Sameer Johal, Farhan Akhtar's trainer for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, is said to have started working with Priyanka.

In addition, Rob Miller, sports action director of Chak De! India, has also been brought on board for the ring sequences. Says our source, "Boxing requires high levels of stamina, so Sameer seemed an apt choice. Rob's expertise in sports direction will contribute immensely."
